Clanchy memories of Lynn Rayment. 1) We, (Peter & Helen Clanchy) have known Lynn for 42 years. Pete and John worked together at the London Borough of Islington Finance Department. Within a few months we had met up as a foursome, no doubt in a pub somewhere or maybe one of the famous Rayment BBQs! John and Lynn came to our wedding in 1979, where they met lots of Social Workers and Accountants (yes, an interesting mix!). 2) John introduced us to skiing and we have lots of great memories of holidays spent at altitude. I (Helen) will always remember Lynn skiing elegantly ahead of me, the “boys” having bombed off down hill while I snowploughed the full piste! 3) Lynn, Claire and I (Helen) had a fantastic day trip to Monaco, leaving the others skiing. We descended the mountain by train and arrived to find: oranges, very posh people in fashionable clothes, more dog poo on the pavements than we had ever seen before and Prince Rainier. We accidentally “stalked” the Prince around town as he went in and out of various functions. I guess we looked like star struck ski bums! 4) Lynn was a definite shopaholic (especially for cotton tops and beach clothes). In recent times we have lurked outside shops and market stalls in Mahon, Ciutadella etc waiting for her to conclude that she needed both items! 5) Again, in recent times we were impressed by Lynn’s ability to step into her swimming costume/shorts while standing (an action we find quite difficult at the best of times). Lynn loved the sun and was delighted when she took the plunge into the swimming pool or sea. 6) In May 2019 we, (Pete, Helen & Lynn) enjoyed chasing John round the final stages of the Cami De Cavills circular walk in Menorca. We stopped at various cafes and beach huts and Lynn never refused an ice cream! At the end John looked shattered and Lynn sublime! There is a photo to prove it! 7) Lynn had a very determined streak, which wasn’t dimmed by her illness. In an old quarry in Menorca she had told us that she didn’t really want to visit it. She maintained her complaints about the trip while walking up and down steep slopes and through narrow paths (which we were struggling with!) Eventually she smiled and said that it was pretty good sitting in the shade of a little medieval garden watching the tortoises. At no time did she give up or ask to go home. 8) Lynn was always “there” for us; interested in our lives, the children and everything that was going on. She and John had a very special relationship, she always provided a calm, loving response to his (sometimes) outlandish ideas! 9) We have lost a great friend and hope that this small selection of memories provides some comfort for John.
